Through themarriage of a daughter, he waslinked to a former president, Juvénal Habyarimana, a Hutu, who was killed after his planewas shot down by a missileover the Rwandan capital in1994. Extremist Hutus accusedTutsis of carrying out theassassination, eventuallytriggering 100 days of killingsin which tens of thousands ofRwandans, including civilians, militia and the police, participated.
